Reviving A Classic: Dylan McCool's Journey With His 1969 Dodge Charger
In the world of classic American muscle cars, few vehicles capture the imagination like the 1969 Dodge Charger. For automotive YouTuber Dylan McCool, this iconic piece of machinery is more than just a car; it’s a labor of love, a testament to his passion for restoration and performance.
THE ACQUISITION: A JOURNEY BEGINS
Dylan McCool's story with his Charger started in an unconventional way. "So, I was doing a live stream on my YouTube channel one afternoon and a guy mentioned that he had a 1969 Dodge Charger for sale and he lived in Oklahoma," McCool recalls. "I was in Tennessee, about 750 miles away. So, dad and I loaded up and we drove 1,500 miles round trip to Oklahoma in two days, picked up this one owner, 1969 Dodge Charger. It's a special edition. So, it's a 383 HP automatic power windows, but it did not run, did not drive. It was pretty rough."
This long-distance rescue was not without its dramatic moments. On the journey home, the car's back glass flew out on a back road in Oklahoma, adding a touch of adventure to an already challenging acquisition.
THE TRANSFORMATION: BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO THS CHARGER
The Charger McCool brought home was far from roadworthy, but that was about to change. Over the course of several years, from 2018 to the present, Dylan and his team meticulously restored and modified the Charger, blending modern performance with classic style. The car now boasts a 440 cubic inch engine with aluminum heads, headers, and fuel injection courtesy of Holley, paired with a HyperSpark ignition. Inside, the full interior overhaul ensures comfort without sacrificing the Charger’s vintage appeal.
One of the most significant upgrades is the suspension system. "We have, of course, the QA1 coilover system with rack and pinion. And it handles and drives like a new car," Dylan explains. "The double adjustable shocks make it so easy to just ride and drive with. It's a fantastic car, just a great driver all around." This upgrade has transformed the Charger’s handling, providing a ride quality that rivals modern sports cars.

WHEELS AND BRAKES: MODERN PERFORMANCE MEETS CLASSIC STYLE
Maintaining the classic look while enhancing performance was a priority for McCool. The Charger now sits on 18x9 US Wheel steelies with factory hub caps, chosen to accommodate the oversized rotors that enhance braking performance. "I went with these 18s because we have oversized rotors and I wanted the factory look. So we went with steelies and we modified the wheels to hold factory hub caps," Dylan says. This careful balance of style and function ensures the Charger turns heads while delivering exceptional performance.
Living the Dream: Future Plans
For McCool, the Charger is more than a project car; it's a vehicle to be enjoyed. "The main reason I wanted it was it was so uncomfortable to drive at first and we wanted to make it something that I enjoyed that I could take my wife out on a date night and actually have a good time enjoying it," he explains. The upgrades have made the Charger a pleasure to drive, whether cruising on a date night or tackling the twists and turns of a road course.
Looking ahead, Dylan has plans to continue improving the Charger, adding air conditioning and other modern conveniences to make it even more enjoyable. The goal is to use the car for events like the Power Tour and various autocross events, showcasing its versatility and performance.
Conclusion: A Passion Project
Dylan McCool's 1969 Dodge Charger is a shining example of what can be achieved with passion, dedication, and a clear vision. It's also an illustration of the timeless appeal of the Dodge Charger and classic Mopar muscle cars. By blending modern performance enhancements with classic style, Dylan has created a car that honors its heritage while providing a thrilling driving experience.
